Rail / Car

The faux tracks are built out of machined fiberboard. The installation stays up for four months.

A public art project built on a pristine but unused railroad track near the Marin Civic Center. Visible from highway 101, the project is designed to inspire a dialog about the possibility of resurrecting rail travel in Marin and Sonoma counties. A collaboration with Gavin and artists Kurt Keifer and Nina Ackerberg commissioned by Public Artworks, 1991.

The artwork can be seen from cars speeding down freeway 101. During construction the artists converse with locals who exit the freeway and share stories about how the long defunct railroad once played a role in their lives.

The project is covered by newspapers, magazines and TV news, including the largest circulation newspaper in America, The National Enquirer!
